Staroyuryevsky district is located in the north-western part of Tambov region. The district center is old Staroyuryevo village. The first record of this village dates back to the 17th century when it was mentioned as the settlement near Yuryev forest. In the middle of the 18th century the village was already called “Yuryevo”.
In the 19th century Staroyuryevo was a trade center where weekly markets, four trade fairs, two mills and elementary school functioned. In the 20ts century the village could boast a postal telegraph office, a credit society, a hospital, a pharmacy and a vet office.
Today the main tourist attractions are the Novikovs’ country estate in Novikovo village, the ruins of F.N. Plevako’s house in Vishnyovoye and “Rastov garden” woodland park.
