The Chistoye lake is located in the floodplain of the Tsna River. It is a closed lake as it doesn’t have a permanent surface flow.
It can be found 15 km away from Tambov. The Chistoye lake has a pear shape and stretches from the north-east to the south-west for almost a kilometer but it is abut 250 m from the west to the east. The bottom of the lake is even. Its depth in the very center reaches 2,5-2,8 m. The near-shore zone has become overgrown with sedge and cane. There are even islands in the lake.
The Chistoye lake is the mystery of Tambov region. The lake appeared at the beginning of the 20th century. As the locals say, the water in the lake dried out by the middle of the last century but in just a year the basin was completely full again. In the 60s, the water level fell dramatically but in the 80s it rose back again. These phenomena might be caused by the droughts but this fact hasn’t been verified completely yet.
The surroundings of the lake is rich in its diversity. Groves, birch forests, pineries have grown on the sandy hills. The animal world is as diverse as the vegetable kingdom. The lake waters are inhabited by the grass, crucian and silver carps.
