One of the most beautiful buildings in Tambov was built at the intersection of the central square and Dolgaya Street at the beginning of the 20th century. It represents an architectural fusion of late eclecticism and early art nouveau. The fine corner bow window with the semicircular balcony and a turret on the roof where the owner’s name – Mikhaiov – was initially engraved connects two facade walls. Under the window there is the main entrance into the building. The hotel and the house had a mutual yard with a stone fence for quite a while. But later the rich Nikolskies, a husband and a wife, came into possession of the hotel and that’s when it became one of the best in town. The hotel had 25 nicely-furnished rooms with bathrooms and electric lighting. A first-class restaurant with a large hall and separate booths was opened by the hotel.
S.V. Rakhmaninov used to stay here before the revolution. Probably, F.I. Shalyapin himself stayed here as well when he traveled to Tambov for his tour.
After the revolution the hotel was nationalized and used as the quarters and dormitory of one of the army division. In the 20s the hotel reopened its doors but this time it was called “Internatsionalnaya” while the restaurant was named “Tsna”. It was the only hotel in town before the World War II that’s why many famous people like Anatoly Lunacharsky, Isadora Duncan, Clavdiya Shulzhenko, Igor Ilyinsky and many others stayed right here.
The House of Charity was opened in the former hotel building in 1996. At present the old two-storey building with a new annex houses Tambov regional duma.
